Colin Keane Suspended: Field Of Gold Jockey Hunt Begins
Whip Rule Violation Costs Juddmonte’s Star Jockey
Colin Keane’s 14-day suspension for exceeding whip limits on Windlord at Sandown has sent shockwaves through racing connections. The Irish jockey, recently appointed as Juddmonte’s retained rider, used his whip eight times during the Listed Gala Stakes victory – twice above the permitted British limit of six strikes.
The punishment doubles the standard seven-day ban due to the Class 1 status of the race. Keane’s suspension runs from July 22 to August 4, encompassing the crucial Sussex Stakes on July 30 where Field Of Gold was expected to star at Goodwood.
The timing couldn’t be worse for connections. Field Of Gold, winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes under Keane, represents one of the season’s most exciting three-year-olds. The son of Kingman has been a revelation since Keane took over the reins following Kieran Shoemark’s departure.
Replacement Jockey Search Intensifies
Oisin Murphy emerges as the leading candidate to replace Keane aboard Field Of Gold. The four-time champion has ridden five winners for Juddmonte this season and possesses the big-race experience necessary for such a prestigious assignment.
Rossa Ryan and Kieran Shoemark have also partnered Juddmonte runners regularly this season, with nine rides each in the famous green, white and pink colours. Ryan’s recent form surge makes him another attractive option for the Sussex Stakes ride.
The suspension also affects Keane’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes prospects at Ascot, adding further complexity to Juddmonte’s jockey arrangements during the summer’s biggest meetings.
Keane acknowledged his error, stating he was “too used to” the Irish eight-strike limit and that the British six-strike rule “went out of my head” during the competitive finish.
