Replay Review: Gaelic Warrior Dominates the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup

A thorough review of the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup replay shows this as one of the most commanding performances in the race’s recent history, a masterclass in positional riding from Paul Townend allied to the sustained class of an eight-year-old at the top of his game.

The Early Stages

Townend secured a clean break from the gates, which immediately placed Gaelic Warrior in a comfortable position on the rail. After jumping the first two fences in the lead, Townend allowed Haiti Couleurs (Sean Bowen), trained by Rebecca Curtis in Wales, to take up the running as the field rounded the first bend. The pattern of the race was established within three fences.

Grey Dawning and The Jukebox Man, the latter trained by Paul Nicholls and owned by former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, tracked the leader, while defending champion Inothewayurthinkin (Mark Walsh) sat further back and would struggle to find his rhythm throughout.

Heading Down the Back Straight

The majority of the 10-runner field jumped with consistency through the early fences on the back straight. Gaelic Warrior tracked the leaders unhurriedly, with Townend requiring minimal intervention. A notable exception was Inothewayurthinkin, who put in a messy jump at the back of the pack and was given a reminder by Walsh, the first indication that the defending champion would not be producing the performance his supporters had hoped for.

Grey Dawning also made two errors on the back straight under Harry Skelton, compromising any chance of delivering a sustained challenge.

The Race Changes at the Fourth-Last

The pivotal passage of the race arrived at the fourth-last fence. Haiti Couleurs, who had set strong fractions for a Gold Cup, made his first significant error. Townend, sensing the moment, shook up Gaelic Warrior and angled wide of Grey Dawning to claim a prime position approaching the third-last. As ITV Racing analyst Ruby Walsh summarised at the time: Townend had committed his horse to the race, knowing full well what was ahead.

The Jukebox Man moved alongside momentarily, and connections of the Redknapp-owned gelding might have briefly entertained hope, but Gaelic Warrior was travelling on a different level entirely. As they came down the famous Cheltenham hill, Townend still sat motionless, his horse on the bridle, while those around him were being ridden with urgency.

The Run-In

Townend took a slight pull between the third-last and second-last, a telling detail visible on replay that demonstrates the extent of his advantage, before allowing Gaelic Warrior to stride on at the foot of the hill. The favourite cleared the last fence impeccably and powered clear with ease, Willie Mullins punching the air in the stands as the margin extended.

Final official distances were eight lengths back to Jango Baie (Nicky Henderson, ridden by Nico de Boinville), who ran a solid race on his first attempt at the Gold Cup trip. Inothewayurthinkin stayed on for third but was never a serious threat to the winner. The Jukebox Man faded to finish eighth of the ten runners.

Timeform Assessment

Gaelic Warrior was awarded a Timeform rating of 174 for this performance, placing him between Mullins’ two previous Gold Cup winners Al Boum Photo (171) and Galopin des Champs (181). The winning time was 6m 39.02s, recorded as 10.98 seconds faster than Timeform’s expected time for the conditions, reflecting the drying ground across the four days.

Total Performance Data noted that Gaelic Warrior had posted a finishing speed comfortably clear of all rivals, the mechanical data confirming what the eye had already shown.

Historical Context

The victory made Gaelic Warrior only the second Arkle winner to claim the Cheltenham Gold Cup, after Alverton achieved the same feat in 1979. His career trajectory, from a beaten favourite in the 2022 Fred Winter, to Grade 1 success at Punchestown, to Arkle glory, to Gold Cup dominance, represents one of the more compelling individual stories in jump racing in recent years. He is now the outright holder of six Grade 1 victories.

Townend’s fifth Gold Cup also makes him the only jockey in history to have won the Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and Gold Cup in the same week, albeit across different editions of the Festival.

The performance leaves Gaelic Warrior as the unambiguous Gold Cup standard-bearer heading into the 2026 – 27 National Hunt season. The notable shadow hanging over the result is the withdrawn Fact To File, who had beaten both Heart Wood (Ryanair winner) and Gaelic Warrior in the preceding 12 months, a what-if that will fuel debate through the summer.
