UK Jump Report: Gold Cup Day 2026, Gaelic Warrior Crowns Historic Festival for Mullins and Townend

Meeting: 2026 Cheltenham Festival, Gold Cup Day | Course: Cheltenham (Prestbury Park) | Date: Friday 13 March 2026 | Going: Good to Soft

The fourth and final day of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival delivered the emphatic conclusion that the preceding three days had promised. Willie Mullins, who had dominated the meeting with a string of high-class performances, landed the Gold Cup with Gaelic Warrior to complete a Champion Hurdle’ Gold Cup double, the first time a single owner (Rich and Susannah Ricci) had achieved that feat at the same Festival since 1940.

Race 1 (1.20 pm): JCB Triumph Hurdle

The day’s action opened with a 50/1 shock. Apolon De Charnie, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by an unannounced partner, overcame the expected market leaders to win the JCB Triumph Hurdle. The result extended the pattern of the week in which punters repeatedly found themselves off the mark in the championship races and confirmed Mullins as the unquestioned trainer of the meeting.

Result: 1. Apolon De Charnie (50/1) 2. Maestro Conti (5/1) 3. Minella Study (7/1)*

Race 2 (2.00 pm): William Hill County Handicap Hurdle

The County Hurdle, a Premier Handicap over 2m 1f, produced a second outsider of the day. Wilful (14/1) won under a patient ride, with Sticktotheplan (25/1) second and Joyeuse (12/1) third. It was another race in which the favourites failed to fire, and the bookmakers enjoyed a comfortable outcome.

Result: 1. Wilful (14/1) 2. Sticktotheplan (25/1) 3. Joyeuse (12/1)

Race 3 (2.40 pm): Paddy Power Mares’ Chase

The Mares’ Chase saw one of the day’s jolted favourites land successfully. Dinoblue (11/8 favourite), trained by Gordon Elliott and ridden by a retained jockey, won convincingly from Only By Night (11/1) and Panic Attack (11/4). The result provided some respite for punters who had endured a testing week against the market.

Result: 1. Dinoblue (11/8F) 2. Only By Night (11/1) 3. Panic Attack (11/4)

Race 4 (3.20 pm): Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

The three-mile novices’ hurdle produced a result that continued the week’s theme of outsiders outrunning the market. Johnny’s Jury (20/1) won from Fruit De Mer (28/1) and The Passing Wife (11/1), in a race where staying power proved the defining quality on ground that remained honest throughout the day.

Result: 1. Johnny’s Jury (20/1) 2. Fruit De Mer (28/1) 3. The Passing Wife (11/1)

Race 5 (4.00 pm): Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup

Gaelic Warrior (11/4 joint-favourite) trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Paul Townend, won the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup by eight lengths from Jango Baie (Nicky Henderson), with defending champion Inothewayurthinkin third.

Haiti Couleurs (Rebecca Curtis) took the field along from an early stage and set genuine fractions. The Jukebox Man (Paul Nicholls/Harry Redknapp) was prominent for a long way before fading in the straight. Grey Dawning (Nicky Henderson/Harry Skelton) made errors down the back and was never a serious threat. Envoi Allen, a three-time Festival winner running in the final race of his career before retirement, completed the course.

Townend settled Gaelic Warrior just off the pace on the rail before angling wide at the fourth-last, hitting the front alongside The Jukebox Man before moving decisively clear approaching the last. The winning margin of eight lengths and a winning time 10.98 seconds faster than expected confirmed the superiority of the performance.

Mullins said afterwards: “He’s such a cool jockey and a superb horse, it was a hell of a performance. Rich [Ricci] has already won the Champion Hurdle this week and Paul won that and the Champion Chase, it’s incredible.”

Owner Rich Ricci added: “I’ve been trying to win this race for 21 years. It’s brilliant, magic.”

The victory gave Townend his fifth Gold Cup, Mullins his fifth, and the Ricci’s their first, after winning the Champion Hurdle with Lossiemouth on the opening day.

Result: 1. Gaelic Warrior (11/4JF) 2. Jango Baie (11/4JF) 3. Inothewayurthinkin (11/1) 4. Grey Dawning 8. The Jukebox Man. Winning time: 6m 39.02s. 10 ran.*

Tragic postscript: Envoi Allen, the 12-year-old three-time Festival winner who had been confirmed for retirement after this race, collapsed and died shortly after completing the Gold Cup. Saint Le Fort suffered a fatal fall in the closing Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, the fourth equine fatality across the four days of the Festival. The BHA confirmed all incidents would be reviewed as part of standard fatality protocol.

Race 6 (4.40 pm): Princess Royal Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase

Barton Snow (9/2) won the hunters’ chase from Its On The Line (7/2) and Music Drive (33/1).

Result: 1. Barton Snow (9/2) 2. Its On The Line (7/2) 3. Music Drive (33/1)

Race 7 (5.20 pm): Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

The final race of the 2026 Festival, and the race that ultimately decided the Prestbury Cup, was won by Henry de Bromhead’s Air Of Entitlement, the previous year’s Martin Pipe winner, giving Ireland a 15 – 13 winning advantage over Britain in the trainer tally for the meeting. The victory provided a bittersweet note for the de Bromhead team, which had lost Envoi Allen earlier in the afternoon.

Result: 1. Air Of Entitlement (de Bromhead, Prestbury Cup decided: Ireland 15, Britain 13

Day Summary

Gold Cup Day confirmed the 2026 Festival as one of the most competitive in recent years. Ireland edged the final Prestbury Cup tally by 15 winners to 13, the closest margin in several seasons, and Mullins’ haul of winners across the week was extraordinary, including the Champion Hurdle (Lossiemouth), Champion Chase (Il Etait Temps), Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (Kitzbuhel), Stayers’ Hurdle (runner-up Ballyburn, winner from another yard), and Gold Cup (Gaelic Warrior).

For British trainers, there were genuine victories: Old Park Star (Henderson, Supreme), Madara (Dan Skelton, Sun Racing Plate), Holloway Queen (Henderson, NH Steeplechase), Meetmebythesea (Ben Pauling), White Noise (Kim Bailey, 40/1 Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle), and Martator (Venetia Williams, 66/1 Grand Annual). The gap between the nations narrowed measurably compared to recent editions.
